Hornets fall to Jackson State on the Tigers’ homecoming

JACKSON, Miss. | Alabama State and Jackson State traded touchdowns in the first half before the Tigers were able to pull away for a 28-7 victory in front of 53,578 at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Jackson State (5-1, 3-0 SWAC) jumped on the board in the opening quarter when Shedeur Sanders was able to find Keith Corbin III on a 21-yard touchdown with 10:31 to play in the opening quarter for a 7-0 lead. The touchdown finished off a nine-play, 50-yard drive for Jackson State.

Alabama State (3-3, 2-2 SWAC) was able to answer in the second quarter when Myles Crawley (Lithonia, Ga.) connected with Jeremiah Hixon (Monroeville, Ala.) on a 17-yard pass with 6:51 to play in the half to tie the score at 7-all. On the ensuing kickoff, Hunter Hanson (Montgomery, Ala.) forced a fumble that gave the Hornets the ball right back, however, they were unable to convert it into points.

The Hornets got the ball back with just over two minutes before half and elected to run the clock out and went into the locker room tied.

Jackson State came out in the second half and scored on their first drive out of the locker room when Sanders connected with Malachi Wideman on a three-yard pass with 10:29 to play in the third. They would extend the lead to 21-7 when Santee Marshall went in from four yards out, and they put the final points on the board on a 21-yard run from JD Martin with 9:44 remaining in the game.

The Hornets were held to 157 yards of total offense, while Jackson State finished with 350 yards. Crawley finished 9-for-26 through the air with 117 yards, connecting with four different receivers including Keron Jones (Oxon Hill, Md.) who finished with four receptions for 72 yards. Hixon finished with three receptions for 30 yards.

Naytron Culpepper (Miami, Fla.) led Alabama State with seven tackles, including six solo stops and a forced fumble, while Irshaad Davis (Carol City, Fla.) finished with six tackles (all solo) and a sack.

UP NEXT

Alabama State will be off this week and return to action on October 30 against Alabama A&M in the 80th annual McDonald’s Magic City Classic presented by Coca-Cola with kickoff set for 2:30 pm at Birmingham’s historic Legion Field.
