Broncos Celebrate Homecoming with a 55-12 Victory over J.C. Smith

Fayetteville, NC (October 16, 2021) – Fayetteville State University’s homecoming fans had a lot to cheer about as the Broncos defeated Johnson C. Smith 55-12 in Luther Nick Jeralds Stadium.

Quarterback K’hari Lane threw for 295 yards with four touchdowns with 15 connections on 22 attempts. Lane utilized 11 receivers and threw his longest pass of 48 yards to Toshiro Spivey, who scored.

Fayetteville State finished with 505 yards of total offense to the Golden Bulls 262. JC Smith threw for 86 yards and ran for 176. The Broncos rushed for 174 yards and threw for 331.

Back-to-back CIAA Special Teams Player of the Week Elton Andrew scored first for the Broncos with two field goals. The first was a 42-yarder with 11:11 left in the first quarter and the second was with 5:35 left and for 33 yards. He finished the game with a perfect 3-of-3 attempts

FSU’s special teams scored again when Jordan Ferguson recovered a fumble in the endzone on kickoff for a 12-0 lead.

Before the end of the first quarter (3:32), Reggie Bryant scored for Johnson C. Smith with a 34-yards pass reception from Antonio Wallace. Wallace finished the game with 86 yards from 7 of 12 attempts.

Lane responded with a passing touchdown for FSU at the 13:28 mark in the second quarter. K’Hari threw a 23-yard strike to Tyeous Sharpe.

The Golden Bulls attempted to make a game of it with a Tyreik leach run for 19 yards. With 8:31 left in the half, Johnson C. Smith trailed 18-12.

From that point on, Fayetteville State applied pressure with two touchdowns for a 32-12 lead going into intermission. Darnell Walker rushed in from 14 yards out and Johnnie Glaspie walked in from one yard away.

The second half was all Fayetteville State.

Spivey started things off with the longest catch of the game with 9:34 on the clock. Brandon Smith pulled in a 48-yard reception for a 45-12 lead and Donshel Jetton rushed in for 11 yards with 30 seconds left in the quarter. Andrew closed out the game with a 28-yard field goal with 9:04 left in regulation.

Keyshawn James led the Bronco defense with six tackles for which 4.5 stops for a loss of 11 yards. He also had two sacks for a loss of three yards. Gerald Simpson and Devin Cowan each had five tackles. Joshua Williams added to his interception totals with a touchdown-saving pick.
