HBCU DIGITAL Band Showcase: The Alabama State University Mighty Marching Hornets

>

In a conference renowned for its tradition of marching bands, the storied ‘Mighty Marching Hornets’ have carved out their own niche. In the process, they’ve become one of the more visible HBCU band programs of the social and digital media age.

The state of Alabama has become a hotbed for HBCU marching bands over the years, as well as the culture driving the craft. This year is no different, with Talladega College, Alabama A&M, and Miles College all getting visibility. There’s one program that’s definitely staking their claim as one of the 2021-22 seasons’ best. The Mighty Marching Hornets of Alabama State University are experiencing a resurgence this season, exhibiting a level of sound quality and on-field entertainment value that has garnered positive reviews from regular audiences, as well as from many of their peers from within the craft. Under the direction of Alabama State Alum  Dr. James B.Oliver, the program has been in the spotlight a LOT. Whether leading the legendary Rose Bowl Parade or having a syndicated cable tv show, the MMH has been a showcase for HBCU bands and Culture.

The ‘Honeybees‘ and ‘Sensational Stingettes‘ are also among some of the most visible auxiliary units in all of HBCU bandom. Both have garnered their own substantial followings within the craft and in the greater mainstream social and digital media landscape. Indeed, this year’s edition of the MMH has staked its own claim for a return to the upper hierarchy of the competitive landscape of SWAC bands, and HBCU bandom in general. October will see the Marching Hornets face-off with the meat and potatoes of their performance schedule. Starting with a showdown with the legendary “Marching 100” of Florida A&M, the Hornets have a full plate. The end of the month for the program will see them pitted against in-state archrivals Alabama A&M, in one of the most storied gameday experiences in HBCUs, the Magic City Classic.

One thing is certain; The MMH are for real and will be a factor for the entirety of the 2021-22 season. Check out the 5th Quarter Showdown with the Marching 100 right here!

Until next entry!
