Delaware State Walks Off, Eliminates Savannah State

Cole Garey singled up the middle with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to give Delaware State a 5-4 walkoff win over Savannah State in the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Championship at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

The Hornets (20-24) advanced to Friday’s elimination game against Florida A&M at 3:30 p.m.

Savannah State ended its season at 13-27-1.

Savannah State led 4-3 heading into the ninth inning, and starter Tyler Robison got the first two outs before running into trouble. The Hornets loaded the bases before Darnell Maisonet walked to bring in the tying run.

That set up Garey’s game-winning hit.

Delaware State got on the board in the bottom of the first, taking a 1-0 lead after Miguel Rivera singled home John Weglarz, who earlier had reached on a triple to left field.

But the Tigers answered in the top of the second, when DJ Franklin singled up the middle to bring home Turner Davis and Justin Washington, giving Savannah State a 2-1 lead.

But the Hornets fought back in the bottom of the fifth, pushing across two runs to take a 3-2 lead. The scoring started when Tommy Jordan, who tried to sacrifice bunt, reached on a throwing error and wound up on third as Adrian Hill scored.

Jordan then scored on a Jared Gillis single to left to give Delaware State the lead.

Savannah State answered the very next frame, when Garrett Bogart doubled down the left field line to bring in Luis Lamarche, before Bogart scored on an Aaron Straker single to short to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead.

Robison struck out three in 8.2 innings of work for the Tigers, who got two hits each from Bogart and Franklin.

Weglarz and Jared Gillis each had two hits for the Hornets. Jeremy Carrow got the win after 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, throwing four strikeouts.
