Lane sweeps Pioneers, move to 5-0

JACKSON, Tenn. – It took late-game heroics in both tilts of the doubleheader, but the Lane College softball team swept the visiting Crowley’s Ridge Pioneers on Tuesday at the West Tennessee Sportsplex.

Trailing by one run entering the 5th inning of Game 1, Millay Lambert led off the inning with a solo home run to tie the game. The score was still knotted 3-3 when freshman Kela Ray lifted a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 6th to push the hosts ahead.

A RBI single from Raelynn Lee provided some insurance as the hosts shut down Crowley’s Ridge in the 7th inning to secure the victory.

Game 2 saw Lane carry a 2-1 lead into the 7th inning before surrendering two runs on three hits including a RBI double from Layne Tedder.

The Dragons fought back in the home half after a leadoff single from Lakien Dillard. She advanced to second on an error, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch to send the game to extra innings.

The Pioneers went three up and three down in the top of the 8th and then walked two of the first three batters in the home half to put the winning run in scoring position for Lane. Kerri Alexander laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Savanna Johnson to third. Ray delivered again, singling to right field to give the Dragons the walk-off victory.

Lee finished the day 5-for-7 with a RBI and two runs scored. Reigning SIAC Player of the Week Jayden McCarty was 4-for-7 with a run scored and a RBI.

Kayla Saul threw a complete game and picked up the win in Game 1. Saul allowed no earned runs on seven hits. She also started and pitched 4.0 innings in Game 2, allowing one run and striking out three batters.

Savanna Johnson picked up the win in relief, throwing 4.0 innings and allowing two runs.

Lane will travel to Mississippi next Tuesday, February 22nd, for a doubleheader with Rust College.
