Howard and Hampton women's soccer team Ania Engram

The Real HU prevailed Thursday night in a fan-favorite matchup. Howard University women’s soccer routed Hampton University, 7-0, reminding doubters who is the Real HU.

Junior standout Melea Earley (La Mirada, Calif.) gained momentum for the Bison, netting two goals in the first 10 minutes. The team captain went on to add an assist to the night’s stats when teammate senior Nyla Allen (Elmont, N.Y.) whizzed one by the Lady Pirate goalie.

Physicality started to heat up in the second half, but Howard did not back down.

Holding a 3-0 lead, senior Marli Berry (Orangevale, Calif.) opened the scoring with help from second-year Bison Bre’Elle Dean(Huntingtown, Md.).

With the excitement at a high, HU made the crowd go wild when the Bison produced back-to-back goals from the likes of Allen and redshirt sophomore Rachel Suttle (Atlanta).

The Pirates’ tenacious efforts continued to fall short.

With 35 seconds to go, newcomer Alauna Rutland (Fairfax, Va.) added one more for good measure with the help of sophomoreSaliyah Brady (Carmel, Ind.).

Rookie goalkeeper Trinity Knox (Atlanta) held down the first half with four saves. The Bison switched it up at the half, bringing senior goalkeeper Kennedy Jones (Flossmoor, Ill.) to the net. Jones made two big saves to cap her season debut.

The Bison are back in action Sunday (August 27) at 1 p.m. when they host Middle Tennessee State at Greene Stadium.
