Bulldogs Claim CIAA Opener

BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State men’s basketball team gained their first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) conference win, 75-60 Tuesday night against Johnson C. Smith University inside A.C. Jordan Arena.

Bowie State improves to 2-8 overall and 1-0 in league action while the Golden Bulls fall to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in the CIAA play.

Bowie State had three players score in double figures, led by graduate senior Tyler Jones (Pleasantville, NJ) with 18 points and five rebounds while graduate senior Kobby Ayetey (Accra, Ghana) contributed 14 points and two rebounds and sophomore Ayan Teel (Bowie, MD) added 10 points and five rebounds.

The Bulldogs got off to a hot start, shooting 44-percent from the floor, connecting 13-of-29 shots aided by 22 rebounds in the first half. Bowie State owned a 12-8 lead in the first seven minutes of play. JCSU tied the game at 17-all at the 9:38 mark but a fastbreak layup from sophomore Anthony Carpenter (Reisterstown, MD) gave BSU a two-point cushion. The Golden Bulls tied the game again with a pair of free throws from Chaz Gwyn before taking a 25-21 lead (4:46) but Jones responded with a 3-pointer to pull Bowie State within one.

After the games third tie, Teel scored a dagger from deep that led to a 14-3 run and a 39-28 lead at halftime.

Bowie State maintained their lead throughout the second half, although JCSU made strides to close the gap to three early on with an old fashion 3-point play, followed by a fastbreak dunk in transition and a 3-pointer forcing the Bulldogs to call a timeout. BSU came out of the time with junior Quinton Drayton (Bowie, MD) hitting a 15-footer that ignited a 15-4 spread with 2:17 remaining to put the game out of reach for a JCSU comeback.

Bowie State will return home when the Bulldogs play host to Livingstone College to continue conference play on Thursday, Dec. 16 with a tip set for 7:30 p.m. from A.C. Jordan Arena.
