HBCU DIGITAL Band Showcase: Kentucky State University

The Marching Thorobreds of Kentucky State University took the time-tested moniker “Small Band with a Big Sound” to new heights in their Saturday showdown with one of HBCU bandom’s true “blueblood” programs, the Tennessee State University “Aristocrat Of Bands”.

Halftime

Visibility is a big deal when it comes to smaller marching band programs on the HBCU bandom landscape. More often than not, programs that don’t have the pedigree of some of the ‘marquee’ names in the craft struggle to get their respective time in the limelight. Whenever there’s an opportunity to leave your mark with audiences on a larger stage against a quality opponent, you take it. The Marching Thorobreds did just that this past Saturday in their face-off with one of the more historic programs in the history of our form of gridiron performance art, The ‘Aristocrat Of Bands’ of Tennessee State University. The match-up took place a the home of the Tennessee Titans, Nissan Stadium.

It was definitely home territory for the AOB, so the performance the Marching Thoroughbreds put on at halftime (and after the game during the 5th Quarter) was pretty clutch. SIAC foes are already familiar with what the Marching Thorobreds are working with. KSU Head Director Mr. Alvin Level and staff have made a significant amount of progress in a very short period of time. That progress was on full display on Saturday, in arguably one of the highest-profile appearances this season for the program.

The 5th Quarter

Whether it was on the field or in the stands, KSU exhibited a sound quality that was greater than the sum of its parts. There have been bands over the years that have taken the ‘small band with the big sound’ theme to heart. That formula is alive and well in this year’s edition of the KSU band program. The Marching Thorobreds went toe-to-toe with a program that prides itself on its repertoire. Check out the 5th Quarter showdown between the Marching Thorobreds and the AOB right here. Big Shout-out to the folks over at SmashTime productions for the awesome footage of both halftime and the 5th Quarter:

That does it for the inaugural edition of the HBCU Digital Networks Band showcase! Stay tuned for future editions of the showcase as the season rolls on!
