Howard Track & Field Gears Up for the Rob McCravy Memorial Invitational

WASHINGTON – Howard University men’s and women’s track & field squads gear up for their biggest test of the indoor season, competing at the Rob McCravy Memorial Invitational, hosted by the University of Kentucky. The two-day event (Jan. 28-29) will take place at Nutter Field House (1401 Sports Center Drive, Lexington, KY 40506).

Friday (Jan. 28) begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by a 9:30 a.m. start time Saturday (Jan. 29).

Saturday’s events will be streamed live on SEC Network + starting at noon and will also contain highlights from Friday’s competition.

 

COVID-19 SAFETY PROTOCOLS AT NUTTER FIELD HOUSE

Admission is FREE. Masks are required. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, in order the create the safest possible meet experience, only essential personnel will be permitted on the track and in the infield. Those permitted inside non-spectator areas include student-athletes, coaches and support personnel, officials and Kentucky staff as well as public safety officials.

Fans may watch the meet from the bleachers and a roped-off area on the west side of Nutter Field House to watch the meet.

Concessions will also be available.

 

MEET PREVIEW

Saturday’s meet features 17 teams: Howard; Kentucky; Alabama State; Ashland; Austin Peay; Baylor; Florida; Indiana Tech; Kentucky State; Maryland; Michigan; Michigan State; Minnesota; Ohio State; Purdue; Wisconsin and Youngstown State.

 

MEN

On the track, senior distance runners Ayoade Adebiyi (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Gavin Williams (Dover, Del.) lead the conference in multiple events. Adebiyi tops the league with an 8:48.87 mark in the 3000-meter run while Williams has a league-best time in the mile run, clocking in at 4:19.26.

In the field, senior thrower Michael Codrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) sits No. 1 in the weight throw event, launching over 51 feet (15.80 meters).

 

WOMEN

Howard women continue to dominate on the track and in the field.

Senior Jessica Wright (Durham, N.C.), reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Track Athlete of the Week, ranks 24th nationally in the 400-meter dash, recording a time of 54.45 at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational (Jan. 21).

In the field, reigning MEAC Field Athlete of the Week newcomer Nikayla Fitzgerald (Kyle, Texas) tops the league in long jump, leaping over 19 feet (6.05 meters), which sits 29th overall in the country.

 

LAST TIMEOUT

On Jan. 21-22, Howard competed in the Wesley A. Brown Invitational in Annapolis, Md., hosted by the Navy Midshipmen.

Wright headlined the weekend, winning the 400-meter race with a new facility record (54.45).

On the men’s side, freshman Chase Drewery (Waldorf, Md.) led the way by winning the triple jump, leaping nearly 49 feet (14.87 meters).

 

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

On Feb. 11-12, the Bison take part in a pair of meets.

Howard goes to Virginia Beach, Va., for the Kenny Giles Invitational, hosted by Norfolk State University, and to Chicago for the Windy City Invite, hosted by the University of Chicago.
