Alabama State wins SWAC Baseball Championship, first since 2016

The Alabama State Hornets took on the Southern Jaguars Sunday to win the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship. The Jaguars fell 6-5 in 14 innings.

While the two teams swapped leads throughout the game up until the 14th inning. SWAC player of the year Corey King finished the game in the 14th with a run scored and an RBI. Southern just wasn’t able to keep the momentum going. Down two runs, with two runners on, Alabama State turned a double play, ending Southern’s run for a three-peat of the conference title.

The win clinched the first SWAC Baseball Championship for the Hornets since 2016 and the first under head coach Jose’ Vazquez.

The Hornets now heads to face No. 1 seed SEC champion Tennessee in the NCAA Knoxville Regional beginning Friday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium for the NCAA tournament.

Alabama State’s only previous trip to the NCAA baseball tournament came in 2016. The Hornets went 0-2 that year at the NCAA’s Tallahassee (Fla.) Regional, losing to Florida State and South Alabama.
