Howard Volleyball Rolls Past UAlbany

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Howard University women’s volleyball team closed out the weekend with a three-set sweep over UAlbany (27-25, 25-14, 25-16) at the Penn State Classic, hosted by Penn State University.

 

With the victory, HU moved back to .500 (6-6) on the season while the Great Danes fell to 3-10 overall.

 

Freshman Rya McKinnon (Bessemer, Ala.) produced her first collegiate career double-double, finishing with 13 kills (match-high) and 10 digs.

 

UAlbany held the upper hand late in game one, but the Bison responded and closed out the set with three straight points to take the opening frame, 27-25.

 

HU led from start-to-finish in game two while registering a match-high .462 hitting percentage; thus, taking a commanding 2-0 match lead.

 

UAlbany’s Charlotte Macken tied the set at 10 apiece after a service ace, but the Bison scored six unanswered to regain the momentum and win the match in straight sets.

 

Second-year Bison Cimone Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) finished with eight kills and three blocks while senior libero Essence Bell (Ocala, Fla.) had 13 digs (team-best) and six assists in the victory. After the tournament, both Bison were named to the All-Tournament Team.

 

For UAlbany, Hannah Rowe had nine kills and six digs while earning Penn State Classic All-Tournament Team recognition.

 

Friday (Sept. 23), Howard returns home to host Delaware State in a vital Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener. Match time is slated for 6 p.m. inside The Burr.
