Bowie State Football Debuts Second In Ranking

The Bowie State University football team has landed second in the initial 2021 NCAA Division II Regional Rankings as released late Monday. The Bulldogs are one of two teams from the Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA) Conference in the Super Region Two poll after also earning (374) votes in the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) Top 25 Poll.

The top seven teams in the region will advance to the playoffs, with the top seed receiving a first-round bye. Bowie State last reached the playoffs in the 2019 season, which marked the second straight appearance.

BSU improved to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the CIAA after defeating Virginia Union, 27-7 on Oct. 23 in Richmond, Va. The win put the Bulldogs in the driver seat to claim their third consecutive Northern Division title.

Bowie State received votes in the AFCA Top-25 Coaches Poll for the eighth-straight week this season and are the highest ranked team in the conference – in fact, the only team ranked in the CIAA conference at No. 13.

The Super Region II is made up of the CIAA, Gulf South Conference (GSC), South Atlantic Conference (SAC), Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and Independent (UNC-Pembroke).

In front of Bowie State (No. 2) – ranking No. 1 is GSC member Valdosta State, while SIAC member Albany State (GA) is third, followed by a pair of GSC members West Georgia and West Florida at fourth and fifth. SAC members Wingate, Mars Hill, and Newberry are ranked 6th, 7th, and 8th, respectively, followed by another GSC member West Alabama in the No. 9 spot and CIAA member Fayetteville State ranked 10th.
